Ludus Magnus Publishes a Board Game-Based Learning Guide to Promote Screen-Free Family Time

Ludus Magnus has published a new practical guide on Board Game-Based Learning, developed within the Erasmus+ project PLAY2DISC – Play to Disconnect: Strengthening Families Through Non-Digital Engagement. The guide is available for download in both Spanish and English through the Ludus Magnus website and the Play to Disconnect project platform.

The Spanish version, titled Guía de aprendizaje basado en juegos de mesa para fomentar el tiempo en familia sin pantallas, is an official publication with ISBN 978-84-09-86399-0. The English version, A Board Game-Based Learning Guide to Promote Screen-Free Family Time, makes the methodology accessible to a wider international audience.

This publication presents the Método Ludus, the way in which Ludus Magnus applies Board Game-Based Learning based on the experience accumulated through research projects since 2017. The guide explains how modern board games can be used intentionally, structurally, and reflectively to promote meaningful learning, strengthen family bonds, and create high-quality non-digital leisure experiences.

The guide includes:

  • Recommendations for families, educators, and facilitators.
  • The educational foundations of Board Game-Based Learning.
  • The role of board games as an alternative to excessive digital leisure.
  • The six basic principles of the methodology.
  • A structured six-step model for designing board game-based sessions.
  • Criteria for selecting suitable games according to age, objectives, difficulty, and group characteristics.
  • Practical session worksheets.
  • Recommendations for families, educators, and facilitators.

PLAY2DISC highlights the potential of board games to bring families together around a shared experience. Through play, children and adults can practise cooperation, attention, patience, communication, decision-making, emotional regulation, and problem-solving in a natural and motivating way.

The guide has been developed by Azael J. Herrero, Miriam Herrero-Martín, and Alfonso Lahuerta, within the framework of the Erasmus+ project coordinated by Asociatia Parinti pentru Copii from Romania, with European Institute for Modern Board Games / Ludus Magnus as the Spanish partner.

Both versions of the guide can be downloaded here:
