Description

DESCRIPTION (Click to expand)

The JUMEMO3e+ project aimed to assess the effects of an intervention based on modern board games on executive functions, social participation, and well-being in older adults living at the Doctor Villacián Centre, run by the Provincial Council of Valladolid.

The methodology consisted of a randomised clinical trial with an experimental group and a control group, with both groups being assessed before and after the intervention. A total of 25 sessions were carried out, using 18 board games that had previously been selected: 3·4 zas!, Catowl, Dobble, Dr. Eureka, Point Salad, Fauna, Just One, Kaleidos Jr., The Haunted Mansion, Mission Accomplished, Pickomino, Speed Cups, Storytelling, Taboo, Ubongo, and Unanimo Party. The facilitator-to-participant ratio was 1:4 or 1:5, so that the same facilitator always worked with the same group of residents.

Results

In the experimental group, significant improvements were observed in several cognitive functions, including comprehension, remote memory, attention, and calculation, as well as an overall increase in executive function scores. In addition, improvements were detected in emotional well-being, social relationships, personal development, and social inclusion.

Participants in the experimental group also showed greater competence in activities of daily living and a positive perception of their social interaction. The results confirmed that the intervention not only improved cognitive functions, but also enhanced the residents’ overall well-being, reinforcing the importance of maintaining this type of activity in care homes in order to improve older adults’ quality of life.
